True Level, explained
One 40 to 100 scale for every team in SoCal, built from verified results. Here is exactly how it works, and what it will never do.
The problem it solves
League names tell you a team's ceiling, not its level. "We play ECNL" and "we play Elite Academy" are the start of an answer, not the end of one. The last-place team in a top league is often weaker than the champion of the league below it, and no league's own standings will ever tell you that. Parents end up comparing apples to oranges with marketing words. True Level replaces the marketing words with a number.
How the number is built
Step 1: the pyramid. We map the real structure of Southern California youth soccer. Every league gets a competitive band on a 40 to 100 scale based on where it actually sits in the pyramid, including league families and tiers. MLS NEXT Homegrown occupies the top band. ECNL and Girls Academy sit just below. Elite Academy League and MLS NEXT Academy Division share a band. ECNL Regional League, DPL, second-tier and pre leagues, and regional leagues fill in the structure beneath. The bands overlap on purpose, because leagues overlap in reality.
Step 2: verified results. We collect league standings from official sources and verify them continuously. A team's wins, draws, and losses inside its own division convert to a points-per-game percentile against the teams it actually plays.
Step 3: placement. The team's percentile places it inside its league's band. Dominate Elite Academy League and you land at the top of its band, above weaker ECNL teams. Struggle in ECNL and you land where you belong, not where your league badge says.
Evidence, not vibes
Every rating shows its work: the record behind it, the number of matches counted, and a confidence grade. Fewer than 8 verified matches marks a rating provisional. When teams from different leagues meet at cross-league tournaments, those results feed back into how the bands relate. The system gets sharper every week it runs.
What True Level will never do
It will never rate an individual child. It will never be influenced by payment, sponsorship, or a club's relationship with us. It will never present a guess as a verified fact. An unrated team has not been judged. It has not been verified yet, and those are different things.
