Your Kid's Soccer Age Group Just Changed. Here's What U11 Means Now.
US youth soccer switched to an August 1 school-year cutoff for 2026-27. See every new age group birth-date window and who moves down a group.

The direct answer first: starting with the 2026-27 season, your child's soccer age group is set by an August 1 – July 31 window, not the calendar year. If your child was born between August and December, they most likely just moved DOWN one age group — and will now play with their school classmates. January–July birthdays keep the same age-group label.
US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO jointly made this change to align teams with school grades and reduce "trapped players" — kids stuck a school grade apart from their teammates. The 2025-26 season was the last one on the old birth-year system.

| U17 | Aug 1, 2009 – Jul 31, 2010 |

What this means in practice
Teams now span two calendar birth years. An October 2015 kid who expected to be U12 in 2026-27 is now U11. Rosters are being reshuffled at every club this summer, which means tryouts matter more than usual — returning-player advantages are weaker when everyone's cohort just changed.
The caveats worth knowing
U18 and U19 are combined as U19 in US Youth Soccer national competitions. ODP still uses calendar-year grouping. A small number of leagues may keep birth-year grouping or use different windows — confirm with your club and league before assuming.
Use our free age group calculator to check your child's exact group, then run Scout on the homepage to see which nearby clubs field verified teams in their new cohort.
