Boys, top to bottom

1. MLS NEXT Homegrown — pro-academy tier, the most direct pro pathway; MLS academies (LAFC, Galaxy, San Diego FC) are typically free.
2. MLS NEXT Academy Division and ECNL Boys — the elite college-pathway tier; genuinely close to each other, both heavily scouted.
3. ECNL Regional League and Elite Academy — strong competitive tier, a common stepping stone.
4. The SoCal League flight pyramid — Flight 1 (strongest) through Flight 3, where most competitive club soccer actually happens.
5. Rec and rec-plus.

Girls, top to bottom

1. ECNL — the deepest college-recruiting platform.
2. Girls Academy.
3. ECNL-RL and DPL.
4. Flights.
5. Rec.

What each tier is FOR

Rec is for love of the game. Flights are for real competition close to home at sane cost ($2,000–$4,500). EA/ECNL-RL add stronger competition and some travel. The national platforms (ECNL, GA, MLS NEXT) are for kids with college/pro ambitions who are ready for showcase travel and $4,000–$7,000+ budgets. Higher is not automatically better — higher is for a specific purpose.

Things the ladder won't tell you

Clubs move teams between platforms year to year, league names rebrand (in SoCal, NPL-level competition is transitioning under the National 1 League banner for 2026-27 — ask your club what their team's league is called this season), and 'Pre-ECNL' is a team name, not a guarantee of promotion. Most importantly: the ladder ranks platforms, not teams. A top Flight 1 team can be stronger than a struggling EA team the same age. That's why we rate individual teams with True Level — whether a specific team performs above, at, or below its tier.
